We had over 4500 people come and visit us this year!!!  We sent hamsters up over 400 feet in the air, made delicious liquid nitrogen ice cream and inspired lots of future scientists with the help of over 20 volunteers!

The Event

On February 25, 2006, Colorado State University's Little Shop of Physics will host its 15th annual Open House. The event is free, suitable for all ages, and will be held in the main ballroom of the Lory Student Center on Colorado State University campus. The event will run from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

The main attraction will be the 200+ hands-on experiments from the Little Shop of Physics. The folks at the Little Shop have been hard at work over the past year, developing dozens of new experiments and making some old classics bigger and better than ever. The theme of this year's tour is "It's All in Your Head" and we have a special emphasis on perception... Is it real? Or it is all in your head? We have new experiments that let you:

All of these experiments are built using the classic Little Shop approach: we take everyday objects and use them to illustrate scientific principles in an engaging and often surprising way. Our primary sources of equipment are garage sales, hardware stores, and discount stores.

Besides the hands-on experiments, which will be available all day, we will have a steady string of interactive presentations. They may be loud, they may be messy, but they will definitely be educational. Some of the presentations:

We will also have a collection of Science Activity Kits available at a very modest price. Take some science fun home with you!

The event is free, the presentations are free, the parking is free, and the event is suitable for all ages. Come join us for what promises to be a very special day in the life of the Little Shop of Physics.

Did we mention it was free?

About the Little Shop

The Little Shop of Physics is a travelling, hands-on science program based in the Physics Department at Colorado State University. The experiments that form the basis of our hands-on program are developed by undergraduate students at Colorado State University, who assist in presenting the program to over 15,000 students each year, in Colorado and neighboring states. The program has been featured in People magazine and on Nick News, and is the only program of its kind in the United States.

In addition to the travelling program, the Little Shop of Physics presents workshops to teachers all over the country, and, sometimes, the world. The Little Shop of Physics produces a television program, Everyday Science, with the Poudre School District Channel 10.

Support

Of course, we couldn't do all this cool stuff without the help of some very generous people. This year, we are very happy to have major support from Kodak Colorado Division and Xcel Energy, and the World Year of Physics 2005.
